If you've driven past the farm and noticed the cattle are in a different spot than last week, that's on purpose. At Firm Foundation Farm we move our herd to fresh pasture often, and each paddock they leave gets plenty of time to rest and regrow before they come back.
It's the same pattern bison followed on the early American prairie: graze hard, move on, let the land recover. That rest is what lets the grass grow back thick and varied, so every move gives the cattle a fresh salad bar to choose from. It's also why our pasture-raised beef tastes great without any grain.
The benefits go well past the beef. Rotational grazing builds deep topsoil, pulls carbon out of the air, and keeps the soil healthy. We don't use pesticides or other chemicals, so our pastures are full of birds and wildlife too. Healthy soil makes healthy plants and animals, and those make healthy people.
