This year's garden by the house had no neat rows. I planted corn, pumpkins, squash, beans, cucumbers, and tomatoes all mixed together. It was chaos, but it was fun.
Everything went on wood chips, and yes, I'm crazy about wood chips. I pulled a few weeds early on, and they came right out of the chips.
Then the pumpkins took over. They covered the ground, and I hardly weeded after that. The garden pretty much looked after itself, and we got a lot of pumpkins.
I've only done this once, on one patch of ground, so I can't promise it works everywhere. And a lot of pumpkins isn't a balanced harvest. But it was light work, and I liked that.
I want to do it again next year and see what changes. What's the strangest combination you've grown together?
