Fall Colors and the Herd on Pasture

 October 31, 2026 by

The leaves have turned, and the herd is out on pasture under the red and orange trees.

The grass is still green, and the herd looks right at home out there. We really just don't feed grain unless a cow needs it. We follow Joel Salatin's teaching of using as little hay as possible, so we stretch the grazing season as long as we can and keep hay to a minimum. This year we're using square bales more than we usually do, made by a new haying partner whose equipment makes them. We'll be watching how they hold up, whether they turn out to be more efficient and whether the herd goes through less hay.
